Why develop folding scripts?

A debate exists on the interest of developing folding scripts, replacing (or complementing) diagrams.

LThe arguments against scripts are:
- diagrams are much more meaningful, because they allow you to immediately identify the actions to be carried out. Studying two (or more) successive diagrams facilitates understanding of the movement(s) to be executed.
- diagrams are language independent.
- creating scripts is long and difficult.
- the description of a series of folds becomes wordy very quickly.
- for the folder, understanding and carrying out the various instructions can sometimes be very frustrating.
- when teaching, the existence of scripts brings nothing. Indeed, the teacher must have great freedom to present the different stages, in order to be able to adapt to his audience at any time.

If all these arguments are relevant and can lead to abandoning the task of writing scripts in favor of the development of diagrams and fold canvases, they are swept aside when we are interested in the development of origami for children. visually impaired or blind people. It is no longer possible to use visual cues, and the development of textual descriptions for the visually impaired or blind becomes a necessity.

To develop these texts, we will place ourselves under the following hypotheses:
- the scripts are designed to serve as a memory aid. They allow you to redo folds already made at least once, with the help of a guide.
- the scripts are developed with a concern for homogeneity of vocabulary and structure, so as to accustom the folder to a certain style which facilitates the understanding of the processes described.

The difficulty comes from several factors:
- you must use precise, rigorous, stable vocabulary.
- the text must be able to be structured, for example to differentiate the different components of a folding for multi-sheet or modular origami.
- you must be able to combine folding instructions and comments (description of the situation, announcement of major steps, etc.).
- it is necessary to be able to have different levels, aimed at the beginner, the intermediate folder or the confirmed folder.

Experience shows that blind people are waiting for such texts, which allow them to do and redo this or that folding in total autonomy. This is why the creation of a library of scripts and the mastery of the means of production of the different media as well as their distribution are among the major objectives of the Aveuglami project.
